Explainer

" Podcast is an audio show which could be streamed or downloaded from the internet. "

How are podcasts different from video or blogs ?

  • Podcasts focus on audio experience. Unlike video or blogs, podcasts do not require their audience to use their eyes to consume the content. This makes podcasts suitable to be consumed when someone is commuting, exercising, doing domestic chores, etc.
  • Compared to Videos, podcasts require much lesser equipment to produce.
  • Podcast listeners are more attached to the creators by hearing their voices, rather than reading their thoughts on paper or screen. An important part of human communication happens via verbal cues and it is sometimes lost in text.

How are podcasts different from FM/AM radio ?

  • Podcasts are meant to be distributed over the internet. Legacy radio works on dedicated FM/AM frequencies.
  • Podcasts once recorded/streamed could be downloaded anytime on-demand over the internet. Legacy radio show were meant to be broadcasted live. Even if the radio show was recorded there is no way for a listner to consume it on-demand via legacy radio.
  • It is easier to track the number of downloads/streams for internet based podcasts than for radio.

Why advertisers like podcasts ?

Podcast listeners are less likely to skip ads. Video ads have to be short or are ususally skipped by viewers. Ads on blogs are also ignored by readers who prefer to focus on the main content. But when listening to podcasts people are usually also engaged in other activites walking, exercising, commuting, etc. so are less likely to skip the ads even if the ads are longer than video ads. This longer engagement period helps advertisers to make lasting impression on the listener.

There are no ad blocker for audio ads in podcasts making them even harder to be missed by the listeners.
