Apple Vision Pro
2023, June, 06
Apple introduced it's upcoming mixed reality headset 'Vision Pro' in a demo video. A mixed reality device has features of both Augumented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
The device is scheduled to be available in 2024 with a hefty price tag of $3499.
It will be powered by an external battery connected via a cable. The battery is said to last for 2 hours of usage.
There is also a video by CNET describing the experience of using Vision Pro.
Eye Tracking
It can detect the user's eye movements and know which virtual icon or object the user is looking at. If this works reliably it would be feel very convenient to use. People will not be able to wear their usual prescription eye glasses when using Vision Pro. Prescription lenses could be added to the device. It would be insteresting to see what would be the long term impact on eyes due contant usage of Vision Pro ?
Hand Tracking
It tracks the users hand and recognizes gestures as inputs for tapping, scrolling, zooming. It would be interesting to know how it distinguishes between unrelated hand movements versus intented hand gestures. For textual input, may be voice typing could be used but currently I'm not sure if there is way to pair a keyboard. Vision Pro seems to be initially aimed at being a media consumption device rather than a device which could be used primarily for work or creative pursuits.
Video Calls
During video calls it would show the 3D face scan of the user animated by the facial gestures tracked by Vision Pro. So the user would be wearing the device on face but in the video call would look normal to other participants.
Immersive Experience
Vision Pro aims to provide an immersive experience where the user can interact with 3D objects.
Cool vs Useful
The features of Vision Pro have caught attention of the the tech enthusiats but it would be important to see what would it allow
